Teamwork is key to success

There are many common sayings about the importance of effective collaboration: “Two heads are better than one,” “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” In this blog post Rory Brandt, Talent Acquisition Specialist, talks about the significance of teamwork at Pragmatic Semiconductor, and explains what he looks for in prospective new employees.

Inspiring examples of teamwork

This summer we have seen some inspiring examples of teamwork: the England football team in the Euros; the GB team in the Olympics. Sport often reminds us of the value of strong teamwork. According to the famous former American professional basketball player, Michael Jordan, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” Even in individual sports, such as swimming, gymnastics or running, it’s great to hear successful sportspeople thanking the support network behind the scenes and relishing the opportunity when there is a team event or relay.

Working together towards a common goal

My role at Pragmatic is focused on finding talented engineers and specialists to join us to continue to develop our unique semiconductor technology and manufacturing, which is opening up new markets for ultra-low-cost flexible electronics. Experience and expertise are obviously key, but personality and attitude are equally important – I try to delve behind the facts on the CV to discover the real person. We need people who are knowledgeable, but also team players, keen to work with others towards a common goal. As the saying goes – there is no “I” in team!

Another thing you notice from sport is the importance of good coaches and managers, such as Gareth Southgate during the Euros. At Pragmatic our managers provide clear direction and support their teams, rolling up their sleeves as required to make sure that everyone gets over the line together.

Company values at the core

For me, the key to being able to evaluate whether candidates are right for Pragmatic is how they demonstrate that they have our company values, which are:

Aspiration – we strive to improve the world by enabling a dramatically new approach to electronics

Tenacity – we work hard towards ambitious targets, celebrate successes and learn from setbacks

Integrity – we are open and honest with ourselves, our colleagues and our partners

Pragmatism – we aim to achieve our goals via the simplest and most realistic path

Enthusiasm – we are excited about our potential and the quality of people we work with

Respect – we work together as a team and trust everyone is making their best effort

I ask a series of questions to get the candidates to open up and help me see if they are the right fit for Pragmatic. For me, this is the most important contribution I make during the interviews, we find that people who share our values make a smooth transition into the business and enjoy working here.

Diversity drives innovation

I love working at Pragmatic as we have such highly skilled and driven people from diverse backgrounds coming together to create novel technology that enables ground-breaking solutions to global challenges, such as waste reduction and improved healthcare. Diversity brings in new ideas and experiences, and people can learn from each other. Having different perspectives leads to better problem-solving. Collaborating in teams opens dialogue and promotes creativity.

Teamwork really is the key to technology innovation success. Join us to be part of the team taking flexible electronics to the next level!
