Pragmatic Semiconductor unveils plans for new UK site

Pragmatic Park set to be a centre of excellence for flexible electronics design and manufacturing

Pragmatic Semiconductor, a world leader in flexible electronics, is proud to unveil Pragmatic Park, Durham, UK as the site for installation of its second FlexLogic® fabrication line producing ultra-low-cost flexible integrated circuits.

This is Pragmatic’s largest investment to date and demonstrates the clear commitment to bring innovative technology, high-value manufacturing, and skilled jobs to the North-East of the UK. Building off the success of the company’s existing fab, FlexLogic-002 will ramp production capacity to billions of circuits, and Pragmatic Park provides space for at least four additional FlexLogic fabs to support continued growth in demand for electronics in everyday objects.

Pragmatic Park will also become the nucleus of a worldwide network of distributed FlexLogic fabs, which will be deployed to provide a dedicated Fab-as-a-Service (FaaS) for major international customers, supporting efficient and secure semiconductor supply chains via local on-site manufacturing.

“We are very excited to announce Pragmatic Park as our new site,” said Scott White, CEO of Pragmatic Semiconductor. “As well as providing an ideal home for our second FlexLogic fab, we will also be inviting selected ecosystem partners to work with us at the Park to create a centre of excellence for flexible semiconductor design and integration.”

Pragmatic Park will transform the present brownfield industrial site into a state-of-the-art semiconductor production facility, incorporating features that will deliver significant progress towards Pragmatic’s goal of carbon-neutral electronics.

“It has never been more important to see investment in semiconductor innovation and production. As we roll out digital technologies that will boost productivity and sustainability across the economy, demand for semiconductors is set to continue to grow”, said Lee Rowley MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. “Pragmatic Park will help to address this growing need, while bringing skilled career opportunities to Durham, helping to level up the region and further build its high-value manufacturing base.”

About Pragmatic Semiconductor

Pragmatic Semiconductor is a leader in semiconductor innovation, creating ultra low cost, ultra thin, flexible integrated circuits (‘electronic chips’).

Pragmatic’s chip is produced without silicon, using thin-film semiconductors to create flexible integrated circuits that are thinner than a human hair, and are significantly cheaper and faster to produce than silicon chips. This provides a compelling alternative for many mainstream electronics applications, as well as enabling new applications not possible with silicon.

Pragmatic’s chips can be embedded into almost anything, bringing connectivity and intelligence to everyday objects. Example applications include radio frequency identification (RFID) and near field communications (NFC) giving objects unique digital identities as well as enabling objects to interact with their environment. This has benefits across the entire product lifecycle, including inventory reduction, traceability, counterfeit detection, proof of provenance, and customer interaction. Pragmatic’s technology can also be used to help reduce food waste, improve the return and recycling of single use packaging, and enable item-level traceability within a universal system for recapture, sorting, cleaning, and return.

Our foundry service uniquely allows agile hardware design, exponentially accelerating solution development and time-to-market. Examples include proprietary RFID protocols, time/temperature indicators, fingerprint sensors, wearable smart patches for healthcare, flexible display drivers, and novel microprocessor architectures.

We also offer a Fab-as-a-Service model that enables secure, dependable, localised semiconductor supply through manufacturing directly on a customer’s site. This highly scalable distributed production allows cost effective, high-volume fabrication of flexible integrated circuits.

Pragmatic is headquartered in Cambridge, UK, with our first fab operating in Sedgefield, and a second fab under construction at our new 15-acre Pragmatic Park site in Durham.
